Kallen has always been fascinated with eschatology and imagining what it will be like to live in a new earth under the rule of a righteous King. Those mental explorations are always filled with questions about the details. While we won’t know until we get there, we do know it will be amazing. Wonder is part of the process which is why Kallen enjoys the challenge of world-building and it shows in his novels.
A long-time fan of science fiction and fantasy, Kallen is always on the lookout for new authors to read. He became frustrated with how dark the genre was becoming. “Sometimes I find an author who rises above the ‘new normal’ and it’s so refreshing. It’s nice to escape into a story that doesn’t follow patterns found in the entertainment industry that tend to be hyper-sexualized, or agenda driven.”
If he couldn’t easily find the type of novels he preferred, it occurred to him that writing a novel of his own might at least provide some personal entertainment value in the attempt.
“I’ve always thought a I had a few novels in me and mentioned it on several occasions to my wife. One day, she encouraged me to stop talking about it and do it. I accepted the challenge and began a journey that has proven very humbling. I have no problem putting many words on a page, but as I learned very quickly, doing it well is a very different matter. I’ve come to realize that I will still be learning how to improve when I complete my final story. Our spiritual journey, and life in general, is much the same.”
Kallen wanted his novels to be accessible to everyone so, the stories are not overtly Christian but parallels to Biblical concepts are easily recognizable. Redemption and transformation are overarching themes. His stories are free of offensive language or sexual content, but there remains some violence and vice. Those aspects of villainy are never glorified, but recognized as problems typical of a fallen world.
Kallen Samuels studied graphic design before transitioning into web design — an industry he worked in for thirty years. Recently retired, he lives near the Rocky Mountains in Canada and finds inspiration for his novels while hiking through the cedars.
Dictates of the Servators is a single story spread across three books (the first one is free).
