During the summer of 2024, a group of Christians from my church and other churches read through the New Testament in 90 days. Many of these readers were doing this important spiritual discipline for the first time and some were greatly inspired by the insights and understanding they were receiving from the Bible reading and the devotionals I sent via text message each morning.
It is a tragic reality that most Christians have never read through the New Testament. The Lord, speaking through the prophet Hosea, said, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” (4:6). Not hurt, not injured, not wounded, but destroyed! However, with prayer, sacrifice, and discipline, I know that any believer in Christ can read through the powerful books of the New Testament.
The reading schedule proposed in this book is quite simple. Read about three chapters each day in about 20-25 minutes, and you’ll finish the entire New Testament in 90 days. I even include “days of rest” every seven days so you can catch up and meditate on verses that speak about the importance of the Word of God.
Here are a few things you’ll need. Get a large print Bible (not a study Bible with a bunch of notes). Pick a place you can go to every day that is well-lit (kitchen table, recliner in the living room, home office, or a chair in your backyard/garden). Go there every day at the same time. I think early mornings are the best time. Do your reading before you do anything else. This reading will require discipline, and remember, a disciple of Jesus means a “disciplined follower of Christ.”
Before you start reading, ask the Holy Spirit to guide you into all truth and to help you understand what you’re reading. Pray against a wandering mind. Turn off your cell phone. God is going to talk to you and you don’t need the distractions and interruptions of your phone.
Also, to help you focus and concentrate, read slowly and read out loud. Don’t rush through the readings and don’t skip any chapters. If you fall a few chapters behind each week, don’t worry. Keep right on reading. So what if you finish in 100 days instead of 90; at least you finished.
My prayer is that you will establish a regular discipline of reading the Bible every day for the rest of your life. You will never regret it. We live by every word coming from God’s mouth. Amen.
Jesus Christ is Lord. To God be the glory.
